New Delhi: A man who recently returned from a country dealing with mpox outbreaks has tested positive for the virus, according to the Union Health Ministry on Monday.

The ministry confirmed that the suspected case of mpox has been identified as a travel-related infection. Lab tests have detected the West African clade-2 of the mpox virus in the patient.

“This is an isolated incident, much like the 30 cases reported in India since July 2022,” the ministry clarified. It also emphasized that this case is unrelated to the ongoing public health emergency declared by the WHO, which concerns clade 1 of the virus.

The patient, a young man, is currently in isolation at a specialized tertiary care facility. He is stable and exhibits no systemic illness or underlying health conditions, the ministry added.

Public health authorities have initiated all necessary precautions, including contact tracing and monitoring, to prevent further transmission. “There is no indication of a broader public health threat at this time,” the statement read.

Last month, the WHO reiterated its declaration of mpox as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) due to its continued spread across several regions in Africa.
